5th and 6th graders participated in the Potato Olympics for some end of the school year fun! Students incorporated their learning from throughout the school year as well as gained some new knowledge along the way. Students had to use a triple beam balance to measure the weight of their Olympian, different units of measurement for the height, width and the circumference of their potato. They then had to research a country that they wanted to represent with their team of potato olympians. We created flags, dove into the history of our countries and even drafted our own "background stories" of our Olympians. After our day of creating our Olympian Profiles and "training" our Olympians on different events held during the Olympics, we headed out for a day of events. The Olympians participated in 12 Olympic Events which included skills in measurement, force and motion, strategizing and also working together as a team. We were having so much fun during our events that we only got pictures of a few events, but if you happened to ride up around Penquis on Tuesday, you would have witnessed our Olympians fighting hard for those podium spots in each event! We wrapped up our Potato Olympics by having our Olympic Games Ceremony and presentation of the medals/certificates. We said a final goodbye to our competitors in one last activity and finished the day with an Olympic movie about the importance of perseverance, dedication and hard work.

Thanks to our staff of Erika Landry, Miranda McMahon, Amanda West, & Derek Perkins for doing this for our students!
